When I left Google, I figured out that apparently I had stayed at Google longer than 80% of the people who are.
Currently at Google. One specific day where I got corp access revoked for a couple of hours.
This is like a random Tuesday.
So, I was like terrified and like panicked.
I was like, "Oh my gosh, like am I laid off?"
Like I was literally in the office.
Then I just went for a run cuz I couldn't like think properly.
I ran the fastest 5K I've ever run in my life.
But during the run, I felt a little bit of just like contentment and I was like, "Oh okay, you know, if.
This happens, it happens." It was that particular just moment where I was like, "Oh, I don't think leaving Google is the.
End of the world if I do it."
I have been rejected many, many times in my career because I came into university.
With only one high school CS class.
I didn't really know how to code.
I was with a bunch of my friends who had been coding since they were 10.
Obviously felt very intimidated. So, when you've rejected literally hundreds of times, it barely phases me now cuz it only matters that.
You get that one offer. >> So, what was your total compensation at Google when you left?
My base salary was My annual bonus was around.
Total was about.
But I feel like I often.
Think I'm doing worse than I actually am.
If a computer science freshman is listening right now and they're terrified they picked the wrong major, what would you tell them?
If you do like coding, you do like math, you do like building things, go for it.
Being a software engineer, it gives you skills that are beyond just coding.
It gives you critical thinking skills.
If there is a scenario where all of us have to pivot, it's a very versatile skill set.
>> Is software engineering going to be a career in 5 years or are the people listening to this grinding leak code.
For a job that's not going to exist?
Engineers who are unable to.
Maddie, you spent 4 and 1/2 years at Google and then you walked away in the worst tech market in a decade.
Not only did you walk away, you walked away with four offers on the table.
But before we get into how you did that, I want to ask the more obvious question first.
Why did you leave the greatest tech company in the world?
I asked myself that question so many times when I was interviewing to leave and then.
I had a lot of like thoughts when I left, but ultimately it came down to three main reasons.
Uh first and foremost, I really love learning.
I want to continuously learn. Um I think Google's a great place to start a career and to learn a lot of.
Technology.
However, it got to the point where I felt as though I could learn more and learn faster if I just switched.
To a different company. Like nothing against Google, obviously.
So, I had already switched teams at Google, so I think that taught me some stuff, and I felt like the most.
Natural segue was just try a different company.
Um second, Google is a great company, but it's very, very big.
I believe when I was there, there's more than 200,000 employees.
Um because of that, sometimes it just takes a bit longer, you know, to get approvals,.
Uh to get your like documents out there for people to read.
And I was um I wanted to see what it'd be like to work at a small slightly smaller company.
I had worked at very small companies like startups and mid-size companies.
When I was doing internships, but I never experienced that full-time.
So, I just felt it was kind of time.
To uh you know, try my hand at a smaller company and see how it goes.
Um I also felt like it was a great time to leave in terms of my career trajectory cuz I'd been there.
For a bit over 4 and 1/2 years when I left.
I kind of think of it as college, kind of.
Like, you know, I was I I was I was at college for a little bit under 4 years, and I was.
At Google for a bit over 4 years.
So, it feels like graduating.
Um to kind of like put it into perspective.
So,.
I think 4 years is a great time for me because I think I learned a lot, my stocks vested.
Um I think it was a great community, um but I felt like it was time that I left because.
I.
You probably have experienced like golden handcuffs.
I think that if I didn't take the leap of faith and leave, I might never leave.
And that's like fine, right? But I do feel like there is something to be said for uh you know,.
There's something to be said for being in an environment where you have free food, free gym, all your friends, everything for.
You, and.
I just felt like I needed to kind of just take the leap of faith and just try making it out on.
My own. So, those are the primary reasons why I left Google.
So, what was your total compensation at Google when you left?
Uh when I left, my base salary was 189k.
Um and my annual bonus was around 33k,.
And.
Uh the rest I got in stock,.
And total was about 315k.
Got it. So, you're making over $300,000.
A year as a senior software engineer at Google.
You mentioned golden handcuffs. I mean, incredible salary, incredible perks.
Like, why not just stay in the handcuffs?
That's a great question. Um I.
In some level kind of still wish like, you know, I had all my like food with me, my gym, my friends,.
But I do think in order to grow as a developer and grow as a person, it is important to put yourself.
In new situations and less comfortable situations.
So, uh since leaving Google, for example, I have branched out my social circle.
Um I've learned a lot of new technologies,.
And I'm like very happy. I was very happy at Google, but I'm very happy that I left.
Did you have a moment where you first started thinking, "Maybe I should leave?"
Or was it kind of a gradual thing over time?
I think it was more gradual.
I will say I'm very influenced by what my friends do.
Like, if my friends say like you should jump off a bridge, I would because I 100% trust my friends.
So, after I think around 2 and 1/2.
3 years, some of my friends started leaving.
And at first, I was like Oh, like at first, I didn't really think much of it, but then as more and.
More people left, naturally just because I think the tenure in tech is so short,.
I felt like, "Oh, maybe there's something I should consider."
However, I didn't seriously do anything.
Like, I didn't interview prep. I didn't interview at all until.
One specific day where.
Uh for reasons, I was.
I I got corp access revoked for a couple of hours.
Um this is like a random Tuesday, and to be honest, this was a month after one of my good friends had.
Gotten like laid off. So, I was like terrified.
I like panicked. I was like, "Oh my gosh, like am I laid off?"
Um, I I was looking at my teammates.
They were logged in, and they were totally fine.
Eventually, it was like revealed to be like a very unrelated bug.
But,.
In that moment, I was like really panicked, obviously.
And then I just went for a run cuz I couldn't like think properly.
But, during the run, I felt a little bit of just like.
I guess like contentness. And I was like, "Okay, you know, if this happens, it happens."
And then I calmed down.
But, it was that particular just moment where I was like, "Oh, I don't think leaving Google is the end of the.
World if I do it. And if my friends.
Left and they seem happy, then maybe it's time for me to at least like try and see if there's something I.
Would even consider."
So, after that particular moment,.
I started interview prepping, and then I submitted my first application.
Did you have a specific plan when you left Google?
Like a specific kind of company you wanted to move towards, or did you kind of just leave and see what happens?
I was pretty open to companies.
Um, I just knew I didn't want to do like super big tech.
Um, open I was a pretty open to startups, to mid-sized companies, to smaller big tech companies.
Um, I also wanted to be a more back-end engineer.
At Google, I was full-stack, primarily front-end.
And I wanted to just go a little bit deeper in the back-end of the stack.
In terms of product, I wanted to work for a company whose product I really like using as a user.
So, obviously like, you know, I'm a massive fan of Google Search.
And like I myself have clicked on many of the ads that my team in Google Search Ads created before I was.
On the team. So, for me, just like knowing the product and liking the product is a big reason why I would.
Join a company. So, you decided to leave Google.
You end up interviewing at 12 companies,.
OpenAI, Meta, Pinterest, Databricks, Netflix, and more, all while working full-time.
So, could you actually break down the numbers here?
Out of those 12, how many offers did you get?
And more importantly,.
How did you pull that off in a market where people can't even get a single interview?
So, out of those 12, I got four offers.
Um I think I was very lucky,.
To be honest. Um.
I know it's not a good job market out there, but.
Uh I think first I was searching for specifically senior software engineering roles, even though the new grad market is not as.
Good. The senior job market seemed okay as far as when I was searching.
I also had to be very careful with my time because as you mentioned, I was working full-time.
I was also lucky in that I started searching around November, and then I got an offer in December.
Around that time is also when one uh you know, most companies have like a bit of a slowdown because of like.
Code freezes stuff, so I actually didn't have as much work.
In my night at Google.
As I did normally, like in the rest of the year where we're just going and going and going.
And then uh second,.
I also think that companies are somewhat trying to like, you know, get all the um head count filled before the end.
Of the year and there's like a reset.
So, I do think a lot of companies were like trying to like hire.
Actively then. So, for me, what really helped was just like setting time blocks.
So, for example, it's like, okay, like at 6:00, I'm going to like get off my corp, get on my personal laptop,.
Do some leak code. I also made a plan.
Um I had never.
Done actual system design interviews before.
I left because I joined Google as a new grad where you don't have system design interviews.
So, I like, you know, grokking the modern system design interview, I looked at like hello interview videos, and like, you know,.
Did that. So, I think what really helped was just the timing of the year that it was, and also.
Being very.
Strict when it comes to time blocking and just like saving the time after work for interview prepping.
So, somebody wants to make the jump from mid-level to senior.
Do you think it's more effective to recruit outside and change companies or just do it within the same company?
That's a great question. I think it depends on different circumstances.
I will say some companies will not consider you for senior.
If you don't have a certain level years of experience.
For example, I considered interviewing with a company that said like, "We will not consider you a senior unless you have 6.
Years of experience."
That particular company I happen to know most of my friends had been promoted from new grad to mid-level to senior in.
Less than 4 years, so I knew it was like possible in the internal track, but I think they're a bit more.
Strict when it comes to external candidates.
If you have I would say like less than 4 years of experience.
Interviewing externally,.
It is harder to get companies to consider you as an L5 as a senior even if you already are a senior.
So, in that situation I definitely recommend try to get promoted internally.
And then use that as leverage to leave.
Um for external when you get the chance.
However, I will say um if you have more years of experience,.
You could try to do both.
Like you could try to work hard to get promoted at your current company and you could also just like interview around.
And see if any companies consider you as a senior elsewhere.
So, I've had multiple friends who've done one path or the other and I think both are great strategies.
Um if you have more than like 4 and 1/2 years of experience or you have less than 4, I think it's.
More realistic to try to get promoted at your current company.
You were working full-time at Google like you mentioned the whole time you were recruiting.
So, how did you manage your energy?
When were you studying before work, after work, lunch breaks?
How did you manage that? I'm not a morning person, so it's all after work to be very honest.
Um.
Yeah, I think that.
Again I had actually just.
I had less engineering work at Google.
Because of code freezes, so it just so happened that I had a bit more free time than I had for the.
Rest of the year.
I I'm the kind of person.
Where I yeah, I work like 9:00 to 6:00, but usually.
I think my mind is continuously on work after work, which is I know not super healthy.
I have to work on it.
But.
I think for the rest of the year I just like so focused on my actual engineering work, I didn't consider interviewing.
Or leaving.
Uh I think with the slow down the work in November, December, I was like, "Okay, like maybe I should actually like.
Focus on other stuff outside of work outside of work hours."
So, like I mentioned, yeah, being just like time blocking, being regimented with when I was studying and what I was doing.
Also, um playing less board games, like hanging out less with friends as a sacrifice that I definitely was happy that I.
Made, but I it was a sacrifice at that time.
I play way too many board games.
Um and then finally,.
Uh there was some vacation that uh you know, like Thanksgiving break that I took and actually spent most of that studying.
In like foreign countries instead of actually having fun, which I don't mind.
Um I actually do.
Uh study and work a lot usually when I'm on vacation, but it was like especially.
Then um.
As an example, when I went to Singapore for a vacation 2 years ago for Thanksgiving,.
I was I took an interview at 2:00 a.m.
In the morning.
And also did was like studying instead of going and seeing most of the sites.
Could you explain what a code freeze is if somebody's not familiar?
And also, how did you get so many offers in 2 months when most people can't get an offer in 2 years?
A code freeze is basically when some companies.
Will.
Restrict engineers from pushing and deploying to production.
When it comes to holidays and such because they want it to be stable.
And when there's holidays, there's usually less engineers on call to fix issues if they arise.
So, I will say big companies like Google often have code freezes.
Around Thanksgiving and around Christmas so that.
You know, Christmas shopping doesn't break on Google search.
For example, or people who are trying to do Black Friday shopping don't like get 404 errors.
I genuinely think that I got pretty lucky.
Um I think it just so happened that I happened to interview.
With companies.
A lot of companies that reached out specifically to me.
I will say if I were to do this again, I would definitely do more outbound.
I'd recommend getting referrals.
I actually didn't get any referrals this time around.
Um that's something that I would change.
I think my rate was so good because I only applied to companies whose recruiters reached out directly to me.
So obviously they already were considering me in their pipeline.
And they already um you know envisioned potentially giving me an offer.
Um I think if I if I was to cold email and cold apply, the uh timeline would probably be a lot.
Longer. You mentioned regretting not using referrals.
How important are referrals in the market of today?
I think they're very important especially given that it's quite an employer's market nowadays.
Um again, referrals don't mean that you'll automatically get the job, but referrals do make it more likely that a recruiter actually.
Like sits down and considers your application.
Um my friends who've gotten referrals have had much better luck.
Uh in the companies that they had referrals to compared to the companies that they just cold applied to.
Yeah, so I've worked with several students to help them get jobs in tech and I always mention that they should be.
Getting referrals.
And funny enough, at one point a student got a referral and then within like 45 minutes they got rejected.
And then the guy calls me and goes like, "Bro, I'm on.
You told me to get referrals.
I got a referral. I got instantly rejected.
Like what the hell? Like what gives, man?
Like this isn't working." And I sat him down and I was like, "Look, man.
That's actually a benefit. You know why you got rejected within 45 minutes and not ghosted?
Because the recruiter saw your application,.
Decided they didn't want you, and rejected you.
So it just proves that like these referrals make it so that it puts you in a different pool, right?
That recruiters and hiring managers actually look at your application.
Compared to sitting in this pile and not even looked at."
Yeah, I will say I would rather get rejected immediately than just be ghosted and not know what's happening with my application.
For weeks, which has happened in other companies as well.
Talk to me about some crazy interview experiences you've had in general.
Yeah, so I've interviewed at my fair share of companies, so I've had some fair share of in retrospect I'll say funny.
Experiences.
One that really comes top of mind is when I was interviewing for one of the foundational model companies, um my interviewer.
Joined and he looked quite nervous and I uh eventually he mentioned, "Oh, there's like kind of an issue.
I'm on call.
Like sev one. I'm I'll be a little bit distracted."
I was like, "Okay." So I started like coding my little thing up and then like 5 minutes into the interview he.
Was like, "Oh, okay, sev zero.
Our our our like website is down.
So sorry." And then he like kind of just like uh he was still on the call but it's very obvious he.
Was very distracted.
I ended up passing that interview and I think one of the reasons was because I.
I like I like to think I'm funny.
So when he said that he was like, you know, sev zero like his website was down I was like, "Oh, at.
Least you know that I'm not using your model to cheat."
Uh he laughed a little bit too hard at that.
So, you know, I think that worked out.
I would say in my favor.
And the second one is.
I I swear like I don't bring technical issues to all the companies I interview for, but a second example of something.
That happened was I was interviewing for a pretty big company.
What happened was I was doing my regular like, you know, coding leet code style question, talking through my thought process.
Interviewer was like, yeah, asking me some questions and like I was like just doing my thing.
Uh but then in the middle like, you know, there was a couple minutes passed, you know, I wasn't looking at the.
Interviewer because I was like busy with my code.
I asked him a question, he didn't respond.
I was like, "Huh?" So I looked back at our screen and turns out he left the call.
I was super confused like, "Oh my god, was my code that bad that he just like straight up left the interview?"
Um so I, you know,.
I I I also uh went back to my email, looked at uh.
Emailed the recruiter, was like, "Oh, you know, did something happen?
Like can we reschedule?"
Eventually.
After around 10 more minutes the recruiter actually jumped in the call herself,.
And she explained, "Oh, there's actually like a giant power outage at the the the headquarters of this company, and apparently your.
Your interviewer.
Can't have doesn't have internet anymore, and they can't can't tell you that he can't have internet."
So, we had to reschedule that interview, unfortunately, but I was kind of sad cuz like, "Oh, I actually knew how to.
Do the problem." I was like, you know, I was I was grooving.
But, those are two of the I think more funny examples of things that happened when I was interviewing around.

You don't have to say any names of companies, but but when you say frontier model lab, could you just list some.
Examples of what that would be defined as?
Yeah, uh so, I mean, frontier labs, there's like, you know, OpenAI, Anthropic, like Meta Superintelligence,.
Google DeepMind, um etc. Just like all the companies that are making the really cool models that you see in in uh.
Nowadays. So, everybody listening to this has seen the headlines, AI engineers making 500K, millions of dollars at these frontier labs.
But, you actually did the homework on this.
You went through hundreds of job postings, talked to your friends at OpenAI and Anthropic,.
And figured out what companies are actually hiring for right now.
So, uh I'm going to ask you bluntly, if I'm a computer science student or junior engineer listening right now and I.
Want to become an AI engineer,.
Who are these people who are AI engineers and what do they do all day?
Yeah, so I think the day-to-day is actually quite similar to a regular software engineer except they're like closely touching the models.
But they're they're not like fine-tuning, they're not like actually working on the research of the models themselves.
First of all, what's the difference between an AI researcher and an AI engineer?
Yeah, so an AI researcher.
Is.
A person who actually works on the inner like workings of AI models.
So, for example,.
Interpretability,.
Running evals, and just like making fine-tuning the model,.
Developing the model itself.
Versus an AI engineer.
Who takes the output from what an AI researcher works on and then implements it into applications.
That then can be used by other software engineers or people who are using, you know, ChatGPT or other models.
To break into the field, do you need a PhD.
Or.
Can you just self-study and figure it out?
For AI researcher,.
Most of my friends do have PhDs, but I also know a couple of friends who don't.
I will say if you want to have a good shot of being an AI.
Researcher, especially in a frontier model.
Company, having a PhD really helps.
But there are exceptions. Like some of the best AI researchers I know.
Don't have like have a master's or only have a bachelor's.
For AI engineering,.
I will say it's a lot more open.
Most of the AI engineers I know do not have a PhD.
It's more like I mentioned, it's more similar to software engineering work.
It's just like do you have experience.
Building.
With AI models. When you analyze those job postings, what skills showed up over and over again that people don't really talk.
About? I think there's a couple of things that people don't talk about that I've seen.
One of the biggest ones is evals.
I know evals aren't, you know, as like sexy as, you know, like building the model itself, but um basically being able.
To set up a good eval system, uh basically.
Being able to.
Uh set up like test cases and tell if a model is actually acting correctly is actually very important.
Both in terms.
Of uh ensuring correctness of your application and in terms of understanding AI fundamentals in my opinion.
So, I think evals is one thing that I don't think people talk enough about, but it shows up a lot in.
Job.
Applications and listings.
Other things that I've seen a lot that are talked about more is, like for example, knowing like how to build like.
A rag system, like retrieval augmented generation,.
Or how to like use MCPs and how to uh build your own MCP.
I've seen like people who want um people with experience building those.
If somebody wants to make the pivot and get a job as an AI researcher or a AI or AI engineer.
And they're currently a computer science student or software engineer, what are the big skills they need to learn to be able.
To make that pivot? Yeah, I would say uh first and foremost, learn ML fundamentals.
And uh for example, like you can look at LangChain, you can take there's like a bunch of courses, like deep learning.
Courses out there. I will say those I don't think are um.
Those are not going to help you in your day-to-day.
Skills, but understanding the fundamentals is very important.
Next, I would say learn things like MCP, like rag.
Um those are very useful and I think universally applicable to a lot of different jobs and a lot of different.
Um types of AI engineering.
And then I would say build projects uh because obviously um in this day and age, like a.
It's kind of like chicken and egg, right?
If you don't have a job, then you can't then it's harder to build skills that determine that you can get the.
Next job and so and so forth.
So, the way to help with that is to actually,.
For example, build your own rag or deploy your own system that shows that you actually have the chops to build these.
Things. If somebody has built up the skills to actually get this role, what's the best way to actually get interviews at.
These companies? Yeah, I would say referrals is number one.
Um, but I also know that some people like build very in public.
Um, I personally don't as much, but for example, I have like friends who have gotten jobs because uh they um were.
Not in the field and they just like posted on LinkedIn or on X or on Instagram and then showed their process.
And then was were reached out to by recruiters and to buy people.
So I think showcasing.
Your work, whether it's on a social media platform, whether it's on GitHub, can be very useful.
And asking for referrals can be very useful, but.
Again,.
Cold asking for referrals doesn't work.
Ask for referrals if you have people in your life or in your professional.
Circles that can actually vouch for how you are as an engineer.
And talk to me about what the standard interview process is at these kinds of companies.
So what does a normal interview loop look like at an AI company?
For an AI engineer.
Loop,.
Um it's very similar to a software engineering loop.
So first, you would have the behavioral.
Round initially when the recruiter calls.
Just make sure like, you know, you guys are aligned with what level you're interviewing for.
A lot of the companies actually, um I will say don't tell you the level straight up.
They'll be like, "Hey, like you might you're targeting this level, but you might do worse and if you do worse, you.
Might get an offer, but it'll be a lower level."
Next, they'll schedule the initial rounds.
So this is usually like a phone screen.
It'll be a technical question or two.
Um, usually leak code style as of now, but I know different companies are moving toward more AI assisted interviews.
When I was interviewing, it was leak code style.
So you're you're just your typical systems.
Algorithms questions.
Some of the companies have a initial system design round here as well.
Just to make sure that you know the fundamentals of, you know, system design before the onsite.
If you perform well on those interviews, then you go to the onsite.
So, the onsite.
Is a.
More extensive interview where you not it's not just one question or two questions.
It's like couple hours or a whole day of questions.
Um those are you'll have your system design round, your actual one where it's like more comprehensive and a deeper dive than.
The initial screening one. You'll have two or three more coding questions.
And then you will and these are usually I would say equally or harder than the coding questions you had in the.
Screening.
And then often times you'll have.
Um a cross-functional.
Round where you'll be talking with not if you're engineer, you'll be talking with like a product manager.
Or with like a UX researcher.
And explaining a past project.
And then um I've also had companies.
Offer a technical deep front dive round where they ask me to.
Um prepare a project that I worked on in the past.
Like obviously I can redact like information, but they just want to know not just how I interview, but also what I've.
Actually done in the past to build like a real system.
You mentioned the AI-assisted.
Round. This is a massive new update.
All of these big tech companies and also of course AI companies are launching more AI-enabled rounds.
It specifically Meta kind of led the front of this.
What have you heard about that?
And then how do you how does And then how does one prepare for this kind of round?
As a disclaimer, when I interviewed Meta hadn't come up with the round yet.
So, this is mostly what I've heard second-hand from my friends.
Um I think there are two schools of thought.
There are some companies like Meta and others that are explicitly allowing AI in several of the rounds and you're being graded.
With the interviewer knowing.
When you're using the AI. On the other hand, I know Google for example actually recently.
Announced that they were recent Google actually started bringing more people in person.
Instead of offering AI-assisted rounds and I think that's partially because of the rampant like AI cheating.
They just like it's harder or impossible to cheat in person rather than like behind a screen.
Um and I know for example.
Some of the frontier labs like Anthropic they don't have AI in their interview rounds.
Um I think it's definitely a shift and there's some companies going toward this AI assisted rounds but some companies are trying.
Their best not to. I'm not exactly sure which one will.
Prevail.
But yeah I I do know that the meta one definitely was like it was a really big news when it came.
Out and other companies started doing it when meta came out with that.
And I do remember when that news came out I was not actually interviewing but I still had access to my candidate.
Portal.
So I actually did go in and kind of like look and they did have the I didn't try it but they.
Did have like the instructions for like how to practice for those rounds there.
So I think um.
In terms of how to practice and set yourself up for the best of success when it comes to these rounds.
Um it's not don't just like paste stuff into the AI and like copy paste it.
Your interview is not going to like that.
Instead I would say do as much of it by hand like when you're practicing as you can but if you get.
Stuck you can use AI for example to look up syntax.
To do some scaffolding stuff but in the end you aren't now not being you're not just being graded on a correct.
Answer. Your interviewer also wants to know how you think.
So you have to be very careful to convey that you can think critically and you can get the answer and you're.
Just using AI as an assist not as like your entire coding prowess.
You mentioned Google is electing to bring people in person with their old interview style rather than.
Incorporate AI.
Into their interview like meta. So do you have any I guess gut feeling or reason why Google is more hesitant to.
Kind of change their interview process?
My guess is so both companies are big.
Google especially prides itself on having like a very very comprehensive.
Hiring packet when deciding whether to hire someone or not.
Um I think.
Again, I have never worked at Meta, so I don't know firsthand on the other side of the process, but I do.
Know that a lot of people it takes a lot longer to get an offer from Google, and the reason for doing.
So is because they're they're really, really thorough.
Meta, I'm sure is as well, but for some reason it moves faster.
So, as a result, I'm sure that if Google.
Decides to bring in a new uh type of interview,.
It's going to take even longer, at least initially, for uh people to get interview trained,.
For um the uh people in the hiring committee to figure out how to like rank candidates.
Part of me feels perhaps it's just it's such a big change.
That um.
Google doesn't want to invest, at least now, like a lot of effort into fundamentally changing the hiring process.
And potentially making it even longer for candidates, is my guess, but I'm not sure.
I think another aspect to it is.
Different big different tech companies have different philosophies about hiring.
I think notoriously,.
Amazon.
Will hire fast and fire fast.
Pretty much everybody I know has gone like.
Maybe not everybody, but like most people I know have gone either an Amazon internship I did or an Amazon offer here.
And there, cuz like they're very likely to just kind of like give out OAs,.
Put people through their interview process, and then of course like it's harder to make it at the company because they have.
A lot of people coming in and coming out.
And then I think Meta's in the middle, and then Google seems to be on the complete other side, where their philosophy.
Is they just take a lot more time in the hiring process, but once you do make it in, you know, it's.
A little bit more stable because you kind of cleared that gauntlet.
Specifically, Google has their notorious team matching phase, where I've worked with probably.
Over five students of mine who have gotten offers at Google, but then they have to wait like three to six months.
For the team matching phase to get done.
Oh, my brother did the same thing, he got two offers at Google, had to wait for the team matching phase.
So, different companies have different philosophies in that regard, from what I've seen.
Well, definitely. Yeah, I think um.
I uh also waited a little quite a bit for my team match when I was there, but I also think partially.
Is because it's during the pandemic, so there was like uh wasn't there wasn't that much head count.
Um and then especially.
Uh there wasn't that much head count in like the particular teams that I really wanted to work with.
Let's talk salary. What's the honest range for an AI engineer at a startup versus big tech versus a frontier lab?
>> That's a great question. Um I think the numbers are extremely.
Variable. Like for example, I know AI engineers who are making.
Pretty similar to what software engineers are making in big tech and in frontier labs.
However,.
As you probably have heard, um some of the frontier labs their their stocks are like especially this IPO is going to.
Go crazy. So I don't think you can necessarily.
Uh I can't necessarily predict how much more.
The stock will rise, I think, if uh if things keep on going the way they are.
And we also know um I think Meta.
Uh gave like a hundred million dollar offer to one researcher.
Um so.
Big tech does have uh specific.
Um guidelines for how much they usually offer people, but they definitely are very very okay with.
Making out of band offers for people that they really want.
So um yeah, I think a lot of those companies it's kind of like Pokémon cards.
Like they they all want the same candidates, so there's like putting money.
And like just like trying to like poach each other's candidates away from each other.
Yeah, in terms of my experience, I have a few students who've gotten um ML engineer roles at companies like Google.
I think one of them got like 250k.
TC for new grad or something.
So.
Obviously very good, but not that much different from like a normal software engineer role.
I know people who are at.
AI comp like not.
A foundational.
Not frontier labs, but just like companies that are like use AI or like kind of like AI focused.
They also make like 300k,.
400k kind of like normal. Then I also have a friend who's at like an um who's at Anthropic who makes like.
Literally 3 to 5 million.
TC.
Like it really varies heavily and like you mentioned like when the IPO happens it's going to be insane.
Like there's going to be people who at Anthropic who make like 10, 20 million a year.
Minimum if not more. So it is really all over the place, but I think the big thing is that it's such.
A hot field right now. Like if you're able to crack this and get an offer it's so much higher than really.
Anything else you can do. So Maddie, you have a resume that looks on paper kind of intimidating, right?
MIT,.
Six internships.
So somebody who's looking at that is going to think that you're somebody who literally sailed through and didn't really have to.
Struggle to get any of your offers cuz your resume is so good.
For your first internship you actually got rejected 47 times.
So take me back to that.
What actually was going on? I have been rejected many, many times in my career.
Especially when I was a freshman because I came into university.
I was with a bunch of my friends who had been coding since they were 10,.
Some friends who had done coding competitions like international coding competitions in high school and won them and won gold.
So I obviously felt very intimidated.
So when I was applying, you know, I got rejection after rejection after rejection.
Um but and I was, you know, I I.
It was really hard not to compare myself.
With my friends, many of whom got like really good internships freshman year very fast.
But I think I definitely learned a lot from that experience and I learned not to take rejection.
Personally.
And I think that is a.
That's a value that I hold very dear to me and I think has gotten me through a lot of things in.
Life. So I'll say.
Yes, I have done a lot of internships and I have done some of them at very good companies and some some.
Companies that a lot of people would want to work for, but behind that is a lot of rejection,.
A lot of a lot of leak code grinding, a lot of like hard work, and just a lot of luck.
So, I honestly would say.
It's hard to it's hard to actually think this, but do not take rejection.
Like seriously. Do not take rejection as anything against how you are as an engineer.
It is a numbers game, and in the end a lot of it is honestly just luck.
Like it's not actually about how you are as a coder.
You mentioned how you used to take rejection personally, and now you don't.
So, what changed?
I got rejected so many times.
Yeah, I think I just kind of got not numb.
I kind of think I just.
I feel like it's like when the first rejection really really hurts,.
And the next one hurts less, and so on and so forth.
So, when you've rejected literally hundreds of times, it barely phases me now cuz again,.
It only matters that you get that one offer, right?
It doesn't matter how many companies reject you to get that offer.
So, exposure therapy is what I'll say is what else.
I also think school does not help with this because when you're a student in school, high school, college,.
You want to get above 90% in anything, right?
You want an A, and to get an A, you have to get over 90%.
Of things right. Whereas in the real world, you could get a thousand rejections and one offer, which is like less than.
1% success rate, but that's all that matter, and that one success pays for all the rest.
And I think the real world is much more asymmetric in that way.
So, like you mentioned, people who.
Are used to that academic school mindset, they submit 10 applications, get rejected from 10, and then they're extremely depressed being like,.
"I'm a complete failure." But in reality, most people are getting rejected most of the time.
Yeah, 100%.
Like I think there's very rarely any.
I don't know a single person who has gotten like more.
Offers than rejections. Like everyone gets rejected.
Six internships total is pretty insane.
So, how important is it for a freshman or a sophomore to get that first internship?
I guess unique circumstances that let me do six.
I'll say it's like it's not you do not need to do six internships.
I think usually you don't have there's not enough summers to do six internships.
I will say getting that very first internship is really important.
It's really really helps because.
It's kind of like.
I think when you get that first internship that kind of signals to companies that you are hireable.
And if you you know get a good letter of recommendation from that internship or you learn skills that you can then.
Apply.
To more projects to more companies that kind of cascades.
I know especially in the job market it is quite hard.
To get that first internship but I would say just like throwing all you've got at it just to get some internship.
Can be really helpful and.
Even if that's not.
Feasible.
For you at the moment doing something like research at a lab or just some sort of like position.
Where you can showcase your skills will help you land that internship sooner or later.
Yeah, so this one funny enough I actually got five.
Or I got six internship offers in college I did five.
So I've actually noticed that amongst like the content creator.
Squeeze and CS majors I know like we all have gotten like weirdly it's either like you graduated in two years and.
Did a masters like Sajad or whatever or.
You for somehow have like five or six internships in college.
So How many Waterloo people do you know that Oh dude, the Waterloo I don't even count that.
They've got like 18 internships by age 21.
Which I think that system is better by the way.
Like I don't think the US.
I feel like universities should push more internships.
That's how Waterloo people end up just crushing cuz they have so much experience.
Oh and I guess for your viewers for context uh correct me if I'm wrong Waterloo.
University of Waterloo in Canada has a I would say pretty cool and unique system where they require.
People to do co-ops during college and during the academic year.
So as a result.
Most of my friends who came from University of Waterloo have done many many more internships and co-ops than any of my.
American friends. For sure. Yeah, I think that system is significantly better than anything else we have here because I feel like.
The US college system doesn't really talk about internships.
Like I don't know about you, but there's no college course.
Called how to get a software engineering job {slash} internship.
Like they really don't care about it at all.
They kind of just assume that you can figure it out on your own.
Whereas the Canadian universities, especially Waterloo, that's literally part of the degree.
Like they make you do co-ops.
They have a co-op system.
Um we work with a ton of Canadian students to help them get co-ops and they literally have co-op cycles where it's.
Like fall and everybody together is applying for co-ops and there's partner companies.
So it's just a way way way better system overall.
Um but kind of speaking about school,.
Does GPA.
And your university actually matter to get a software engineering job?
In my opinion, GPA does not matter at all.
I never had my GPA on my resume and that didn't stop me from getting the things that I did.
I will say for school,.
Yes,.
But it's more nuanced. Um I think.
Having a good school on your resume does make it more likely that a recruiter will look at your resume and consider.
You. However, I think if you're able to get internships or showcase your experience.
In other ways that's not just your your school,.
That will help um the recruiter be like, "Oh, you know, even if it isn't like a top school, that's like totally.
Fine. Like they have these many internships, these uh these projects."
But I will say that there are companies that do.
Look at school.
I will also say.
For example, Google, like most people who work at Google didn't come from, you know, so-called like top or prestigious computer science.
Schools.
Um because.
You it's not just about the school, you also have to pass the technical interviews as well.
I think it helps a lot to have a good school, but it's definitely not a requirement or to get a good.
Internship. For sure. I'm on the same page as you.
I think your school can help when it comes to getting that first interview,.
But then the rest is kind of up to you.
And I also think that part of it is like a tier system.
Like if you go to.
MIT or Harvard or one of those top schools, sure you're going to get more interviews.
It's kind of a given.
So that's one tier of things like an Ivy League level.
Then there's also like another level of school which is like good computer science schools.
Like for example,.
Berkeley is a really good computer science school, UIUC,.
Georgia Tech, right? These like state schools that are still very good computer science universities.
That also helps just to have not only that name on the resume, but also like the vibe there, right?
Cuz everybody's grinding CS, everybody's working on applications getting on internships.
The professors are really great. So I think that kind of vibe helps overall.
But then if you're not in those two categories, like you're kind of in the same level as pretty much everybody else.
Sure, maybe it's a little bit harder to get interviews, but it's not insane, right?
There's so many people out there who are from regular universities and regular schools that get all offers every single day.
So I totally agree with you.
I don't think it's I think more people kind of overemphasize.
Their university and kind of use that as an excuse.
Rather than realize that it really doesn't matter at all compared to the long run.
I see. Yeah, I something that you said resonates.
I probably wouldn't have known to like how to apply or to apply to internships if it wasn't for the fact that.
I was in school with a lot of folks.
Who were applying and who were interviewing.
And I was able for example to practice like white boarding questions with them.
I think it's not just the school, but it's also.
That environment. And if you happen to be at a good school, it is more likely you'll be put in an environment.
Where everyone is grinding and getting internships.
So then you feel pressure and you feel support.
When you're trying to get your own internship.
For sure. And I think the big thing there, the larger principle is that.
It's not like MIT's data structures are different from any other school's data structures, right?
Like Harvard publishes all of their courses, even MIT, right?
MIT Open Courseware, whatever it's called.
Like they literally put their courses online for free.
So, it's not you're not paying for the course material.
Well, there's only two things you're really paying for.
One is for for like a recruiter to see the name on your resume and be more likely to give you an.
Interview. And two, you're paying for that kind of vibe and networking culture, right?
Of everybody waking up every day, grinding, applying,.
All on that same journey. So, totally see what you mean, like over half the benefit of college is that kind of.
Like overall energy there. Let's talk about promotion.
Your manager at Google put you up for promotion before you felt like you were ready.
Two weeks before promo, she literally pulled you aside and said, "I think your packet is stronger than you think it is."
So, walk me through that moment, because I think almost everybody listening to this is probably underselling themselves.
Yeah, um so, how Google does its promotion.
And performance recycles is that.
Every there's two.
Um times of the year where you either can go for promo.
Or get a performance review. So, I was preparing for the performance review part, and I didn't consider.
Trying to get promoted.
Like you mentioned, um a couple weeks before.
The deadline,.
My manager had read my packet, and she mentioned like she was like, "Hey, I think you actually have a decent chance.
Of getting promoted. Is it something you want to go for?"
This was from new grad to mid-level.
And yeah, I of course said yes, and then I scrambled to put together things.
But, that experience taught me a couple of things.
First, it taught me that.
I think um I in my I'm trying to be better at this, but I feel like I often.
Think I am doing worse than I actually am.
In my career and in a lot of things.
I shouldn't rely on my manager to be the one to to vouch for me, right?
I should be the one advocating for myself.
And afterward,.
I did talk to a lot of my friends and all the ones who gotten promoted earlier were also the ones who.
Put um.
Who like mentioned that they wanted to be promoted to their manager.
So, their managers were able to then um help them with their gap analysis, help them pick projects that would get them.
Promoted,.
And just not having that in the my mind, I think was a disadvantage for me.
So, that's one thing that this experience taught me.
And second, this experience taught me how important it is to have a supportive manager,.
Especially.
Um in at Google um.
Your manager will not be the only reason why you get promoted because um how it works is your packet gets put.
In front of not just your manager, but also.
Um a couple of like people who are in this uh promotion committee, as well as like high-level ICs and managers from.
Elsewhere in the org and even beyond the org, but it's your manager's job to advocate for you.
So, in that in that like promotion committee, which uh you as a IC are are not privy to.
Having.
A manager who knows exactly what you are doing,.
Understands the complexity of it, and wants you to get promoted.
Is what will make or break your promotion.
Uh chances. What if someone listening has the opposite, a manager who isn't advocating for them?
What do you do then? Honestly, that's a tough.
Scenario.
Um I will say I I think I've been very lucky.
Like every manager I've ever worked with has been really supportive,.
Um whether it's for promo, whether it's for projects.
I would say.
Mm I think it depends on the company.
I think for Google, to be very honest,.
I would say switch teams.
Because.
Given the structure, if your manager is not.
Advocating for you,.
Other people's managers will advocate.
For their own reports, and then you will always be ranked lower than them, is my opinion.
Um I could also I would also say it's possible to talk to your skip manager, like your manager's manager,.
About the concern,.
If it's just your manager doesn't like you, there's not much I think a skip can say.
To make your manager like you.
If it's more of a miscommunication,.
If it's like your manager doesn't understand like how much work you're doing or the impact of it, perhaps there is some.
Room where you can like sit your manager down and be like, "Hey, I just want to like like just like show.
What I've been doing and here's like the impact and here's XYZ and here's why it's impressive."
That could be a start, but I think if your manager just genuinely doesn't like you as a person, then it's it's.
Really hard to.
It's hard really hard to get beyond that hurdle without switching teams.
You said that one of your tricks was asking co-workers who'd already been promoted if you could see their packets.
What do you think about the approach and how do you ask that without feeling weird?
Yeah, um so I asked specifically not not my direct team well,.
I asked a mix of people.
I asked uh well, like a couple of people I really trusted who were senior in my team.
I also asked a couple of mentors that I had.
Um Google has this really cool thing where when you start and also when you join different orgs,.
There's often times like a mentor mentee program and I got paired with a lot of a couple of mentors who gave.
Me really useful advice for the years.
Um to make it not weird,.
I think like obviously like I never.
Uh in I never insisted or expected they would give the packet.
I kind of just uh went and scheduled meeting and was like, "Hey,.
Um I'm like trying to go for a promo.
Uh I just want some guidance if there's any like artifacts or any help that you can give me, that would be.
Super appreciated."
And uh most of them just like straight up offered their packets.
So, I was able to see like, "Hey, like this is what they wrote up and this is what got them promoted."
So, I think that was a really useful insight, but it obviously it's like I I never would uh like I never.
Demanded the packet. They actually most of them did offer um preemptively when I just mentioned that I'm just looking for help.
And I just wanted to kind of see their process and what they did.

Let's talk reorgs. You were on Google Health Search and you said the team kept getting reorged.
So, what does that do to a young engineer trying to grow?
I will say that reorgs, I don't think anyone really likes reorgs.
I will say sometimes they're they're necessary and I think that in our particular case, because we.
Built features that directly.
Um impacted the COVID.
Uh COVID and COVID vaccine work that Google was doing, maybe uh we just got reorged a lot.
Unfortunately,.
I Google at least, a lot of what determines if you get promoted or not is impact.
And if your team is getting reorged a bunch, it's sometimes hard to show impact.
If um you know, priorities keep on changing.
Or projects get canceled.
Um I know this is also not a specific thing to Google.
It's not a specific thing to big tech at all.
It's like, you know, it's many many companies, many things.
Especially as a young engineer who's like just trying to figure out her footing in the corporate world, it can be very.
Distracting and it can I would say slow down um your promo chances, for example.
Could you kind of explain why reorgs so frequently happen and how does someone survive them?
I think reorgs.
Are.
Usually for a variety of reasons.
Sometimes it's if um someone high-ranking left and then they just kind of want to reshuffle.
The org structure and the leadership.
Sometimes it's if the company decides that the priorities have changed and they just want to make.
Um the teams more aligned with the new priorities.
Uh sometimes if it's if uh like there's.
Like a lot of attrition for example and like leadership decides they want to do something about it.
So there's a bunch of different reasons.
Yeah, I think like for frequent reorgs, I think sometimes it's good to bring up any concerns.
Um often times when we had reorgs, I remember we had like town halls.
Where people could bring up um concerns anonymously or with their name attached.
So there were very some very good questions that were asked to leadership during those town halls and I do think that.
Even though we did get reorgs after that, I do think that leadership did take those concerns and those suggestions.
Into consideration when deciding. As an example, I'll say that I actually was never reorged away from my core engineering team and.
That was very good because even if my projects changed, I was still able to work with the same people who like.
Kind of knew me already and knew my work and I'm very grateful for that.
Another thing that is useful in helping you survive reorgs.
Is just trusting your teammates and talking to them.
Since sometimes.
In the beginning I kind of felt like maybe my concerns and my questions were just like me not understanding the system.
As a new grad and maybe it was just like just me, but the more I talked to my teammates, the more.
I realized that yeah, like these are valid concerns and like these are stuff that as a team if we talk through.
And if we like try to just like share information.
And share contacts and share the history which I didn't know of the org can be very powerful in helping us survive.
Together. Let me ask you the question everybody listening is afraid to say aloud.
You work in big tech, you have friends at OpenAI and Anthropic.
You've watched AI go from something cool to this is writing production code in just a few years.
So tell me honestly, is software engineering going to be a career in 5 years or are the people listening to this.
Grinding lead code for a job that's not going to exist?
That's a That's a great question.
That's the same question I get asked very often.
Uh my personal opinion is I think yes, software engineering will still be a job in 5 years, but it'll probably look.
Very different from.
You know, when I was a new grad, from when like even 2 years ago because AI is moving at such a.
Rapid pace.
But, I will say.
Being a software engineer is more than just being able to code.
Being a software engineer is also understanding like how to build systems that are reliable and robust,.
How to handle edge cases, how to deal with stakeholder concerns,.
How to navigate that, and.
As of now, I don't think AI can handle all of that for us.
So, I would say that if you are a software engineer or if you're a computer science student right now,.
And you want to stay in the field, I think that's amazing.
I think there's so much like growth and so much learning potential in the field, but I will say.
You have to be able to adapt quickly.
I think engineers who are unable to adapt or unwilling to adapt will get left behind, and the people that are able.
To either work on these AI models systems or are able to utilize them effectively and well in their day-to-day coding and.
Day-to-day workflow will be the ones that thrive.
If a computer science freshman is listening right now, and they're terrified they picked the wrong major, what would you tell them?
I will say that if you're in computer science just because you think it pays a lot, and that's your only reason.
For being in the computer science field, that's probably not going to work out in your favor.
I will say if you do like coding, you do like math, you do like building things,.
And you want to stick with it, I would say go for it because.
I think even though, you know, there's a lot of uncertainty,.
I think the field is still like very robust, and also I think being a computer scientist and being a software engineer,.
It gives you skills that are beyond just coding.
It gives you critical thinking skills,.
And I do think that that makes it more likely if there is a scenario where all of us have to pivot,.
If you just keep those skills,.
It is a it's a very versatile skill set.
You worked on Google Search for years.
Do you think Google is still going to be the top dog in 5 to 10 years with OpenAI,.
Anthropic, and Perplexity breathing on their neck?
That's a great question.
I don't know how to predict the future.
I'm biased. I really do like like I mentioned,.
Would only work for companies where I'm like obsessed with the product.
I really do like Google Search.
Like even now even with all the competition,.
I will say.
I think OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, they definitely are giving Google a run for its money.
But I will say I think that's actually a good thing.
I think Google, in my opinion,.
Kind of took the fact that it was like on top and just like kind of didn't do a lot of innovation.
For a very long time. Like yeah, we still built features, but I think For example, Google had transformers in 2017.
And then didn't really do anything about it.
So, I think ironically,.
Having these competitors.
Will make Google more innovative, which will then make those competitors more innovative, and I do see this as a hopefully a.
Feedback cycle that will just make products better for the end user, which is ourselves.
Is what I'm hoping. Is LeetCode still worth grinding in 2026 or is it officially dead?
For now, given that a lot of companies are asking LeetCode questions and even the companies that are having AI.
Assisted coding interviews still do ask LeetCode style questions, I would say yes.
We'll see if companies.
End up.
Going the Meta route where like you mentioned it's like more and more AI assisted interviews.
Or they'll go the Google route, which is asking candidates to come in person again.
What's your hot take on whether LeetCode is actually.
Valuable.
As a way to interview candidates?
I guess my hot take is it's actually valuable and let me let me explain.
So, I know that we're not.
Doing memos or we're not like balancing a binary tree in in day-to-day.
I do think that.
LeetCode is a filter that well companies can afford to use because it's an employer's market.
What I mean by that is there are people that are very good engineers that are not good at LeetCode.
However, I would say most people that are good at LeetCode are all are good engineers.
Companies because they have so many candidates to choose from, it is efficient for them to just be like, "Okay, we just.
Want people who are good at LeetCode."
Because most of the people who are good at LeetCode are good engineers.
But like there are a lot of good engineers who just aren't that good at LeetCode.
So, unfortunately,.
I think that's the reason why LeetCode.
Has stayed prevalent for so long.
Even though.
It's like not exactly one-to-one with what you're actually doing as a software engineer day-to-day.
I was going part of it is people act as if LeetCode is literally just an OA,.
But really a LeetCode interview is testing your problem-solving.
Skills live under pressure with someone sitting right there, right?
And especially good interviewers won't just throw you, you know, two sum, right?
They're not They're not just going to give you a LeetCode problem that you can just memorize off the blind 75.
They're going to give you a problem.
That has some very variations that it's not public on LeetCode, and then they're going to add another very variation to it,.
And then another level, and then another level until you break, until you literally cannot solve it.
And they want to see you melt down, right?
They want to see how you handle that pressure and how you actually work through it in a collaborative process.
So, I think maybe not memorizing a LeetCode problem in an OA is the best, but I think that I'm on your.
Side. Like I think that process is actually better than most people give credit to.
But on the flip side, why do people hate LeetCode so much?
Well, I think people hate LeetCode because it First of all, like I think there I have friends where.
Algorithms and LeetCode comes very naturally to them, and they don't even need to study, and they get interviews, and they get.
They pass them.
I am not one of them.
I need to grind quite hard to be acceptable.
At leak code style questions and.
I think the fact that every a lot of people are like me and we're not naturally good at leak code.
We just like have to do the grind.
Makes it very stressful.
Like I think some of the most stressful times in my life was when I was like, you know, going to school.
And also like studying leak code and also flying out for interviews.
So I think that's the reason why people dislike leak code.
Also, like I mentioned, it's not really what you do actually as a software engineer.
So it's just kind of.
A seemingly silly that everyone has to do and everyone has to just like, you know, grind in order to get the.
Job. And it's like the fact that.
There are other.
Industries industries that do this as well, but it's the fact that to be a software engineer, if you want to leave.
Your company,.
You have to do this dance like no matter like maybe if you're like Sundar,.
Maybe if you're like VP level, you don't anymore, but you know, as a individual contributor,.
You have to do this every single time you want to move companies.
This makes it quite.
Uh stressful and quite intimidating.
Have you.
Used linked lists in your actual job?
Not really.
I've used tags, I guess. Yeah, it's kind of it's just a meme.
I feel like nobody's ever encountered a linked list in a code base ever.
Um let's talk about cheating in interviews.
AI cheating in interviews is rampant.
So do you have any stories of yourself or friends that have encountered cheating in interviews?
Yeah, so.
I think when I interviewed um more than a year ago,.
Those like very prominent AI cheating tools weren't really a thing and I actually haven't really interviewed candidates myself in a while.
A lot of my friends have and a lot of my friends have funny stories.
So the most recent one was one of my friends mentioned that for his company, he was interviewing this person.
First of all, he realized something was wrong when he like looked at the reflection of the glasses.
And saw that there was literally um a reflection of the AI cheating tool on the person's screen.
And it was like, "Huh, interesting."
It was very obvious, right? So, then he was like, "Okay, like let's see how this goes."
So, he continued asking the question.
And then.
The what happened was he would ask a question, the interviewee.
Would pause for 5 seconds, and then it's like,.
"That's a great point. So, to blah blah blah."
So, it's like very like ChatGPT style questions, and then the That was what really keyed him in.
He's like, "Oh, he's like definitely cheating."
Right? It's not just like me not not like me missing like the screen or something else.
And then for this particular candidate, something else that was really funny was he was interviewing in Java.
In the IDE that the coding interview was taking place in, um you like open the interview The interviewee would open a.
Curly brace,.
And then uh the the.
The closing curly brace would appear.
It would backspace the curly space and just like type perfect code, and then add the curly brace again.
And my friend was like, "What?"
Another funny story that my friend another friend told me about an interview.
Was.
Um the person.
I didn't know this was a thing.
Actually, I didn't know it was possible, but apparently some AI cheating tools actually type the code for you.
It's not even like they have it on the screen, you type it yourself.
They type it for you. The reason why my friend caught this candidate was because at some point the candidate stretched.
With both hands up, and then the code kept on being written.
And my my friend was like, "What?"
I'm like, "Seriously, like at least like be be like subtle about it."
So, I think um.
Unfortunately.
AI cheating seems more and more rampant, especially with the tools,.
But I will say there are people that are very obvious about it.
And obviously have gotten caught by my friends.
Yeah, my question is like, does anybody actually get away with AI cheating?
Is it just I just feel like it's so obvious.
Like every single person I know who interviews has caught an AI cheater.
Right? I've every single person who interviews today has.
So, do you know I mean, you probably wouldn't admit it.
You probably wouldn't reveal their names, but I just don't know anybody who's like gotten away with cheating, cuz that's crazy.
Yeah, I guess I mean I I guess by by definition the people that are good at cheating are not getting caught.
But I I do think like the people that my friends tell me about it's like people where.
I feel like maybe if you're a candidate.
And you just like need a little bit nudge, if you just like got like a couple like just like the the.
Framework could be okay and it would be less obvious.
I think for these particular candidates it was like obvious like.
Without the AI cheating tool they had no idea what's going on.
Basically their answers are very like formulated.
It like sounds a lot like GPT.
And one of my friends realized the trick that he uses to catch people is he words his question a bit unclear.
On purpose initially. So real candidates they'll be confused and they'll ask follow-up questions.
And he'll.
Actually give the question in a more clear format.
But for the AI tools apparently.
They're what they do is instead they kind of try to solve the question given like the unclearness and they just like.
Give like a more random solution.
And that's how this particular friend has been able to catch people who are cheating just like by deliberately introducing some human.
Confusion and then seeing if the person acts like an AI or acts like a human.
Yeah, the last guest that I just interviewed was talking about AI cheating and he interviewed this Harvard.
Guy.
Who obviously Harvard guy with Google and Amazon on their resume.
And they were sharing screen during the interview and then all of a sudden the Clowder Lee thing shows up.
With like the Clowder Lee thing like all the Clowder Lee UI or whatever.
Which is just so weird cuz Clowder Lee I guess markets itself as invisible and it was just so funny.
I know taking off nowadays for.
Yeah, maybe. And then apparently this guy I talked to you in the the podcast like he didn't call the interview we.
Out.
At first until he saw the Clowder Lee UI had the question in there and it was giving him the answer and.
It was literally visible on on screen share.
So then he immediately called him out and canceled the interview.
Um but I just think it's crazy like how many people are cheating with AI.
But um.
To talk about another topic here,.
Do personal projects actually matter or should someone just grind leak code to get internships instead?
I think personal projects can help if you have time.
Um but I'll say I think personal projects are more.
To.
Help you get the interview.
So, if the issue is you're not getting interviews, maybe it's more important to do personal projects.
But, if you are getting the interview and you're not passing them, I think it's more important to grind leak code.
It depends on like what category you're in, but yeah, I think um.
Also if you have a lot of experience, like job experience on your resume,.
Your personal projects matter less. But, if you're a new grad or if you're like a.
Beginner student,.
Then I think if you have time, then it's more important to use those personal projects to fill up your resume until.
You have job experience and then you can like spend on the job experience more.
Let's talk job hopping. You spent 4 and 1/2 years at Google, which is basically a lifetime in big tech now.
Is there a good cadence or is that a myth?
I think it's also very person dependent.
I personally,.
To be honest, like like I mentioned, I would have been probably very happy if I stayed there like 10 years, right?
I I really really love Google and really love the culture.
I think it's more what you want for your own career.
As like I mentioned, I think for me, I just felt like I wanted to learn to something outside of Google.
And Google is great, but I do think.
In some level there's kind of a tech island effect.
Like a lot of the services and a lot of the technologies I use were very Google internal, which is really good.
In helping me accelerate my day-to-day.
Engineering, but makes it harder for me to understand what's going on outside the Google bubble in the tech world.
I would say, um.
If you job hop like way too much, like maybe especially in today's job market,.
Companies might look at that and be a little bit weirded out.
Um but I think in the past, like I I feel like there's been people who like hop every like 1 to.
2 years and like they get up-leveled every single time and it works out well for them.
So, I think it just depends on the person and on the job market.
When I left Google, um I was kind of just curious like my tenure, so.
Um I.
Figured out that I apparently had stayed at Google longer than 80% of the people who are currently at Google.
Uh so,.
Apparently it was an eternity for a lot of people, but for me it felt honestly.
Very similar to college. It's like, oh, I worked here like for 4 and 1/2 years and this is like a good.
Time to leave. So, I feel like.
You I I think there's nothing wrong with exploring options.
When you're uh deciding what to do with your career.
And if you happen to get a better option, you should take it, but if you are in a company or in.
A situation where you're learning.
And your manager's supportive and you might get promoted, then there's also absolutely no issue with staying.
